High Powered "Stain Remover"

By: John R. Luckasen, M.D.

What cute names - port wine stains, angel kisses, stork bites, café au lait stains.  But for the thousands of babies born every year with these conditions, the diagnosis can be traumatic.  These are all potentially disfiguring birthmarks that can cause social problems if left untreated.  But a new laser, the V-Beam Perfecta, signals the end to embarrassment by treating most birthmarks, from brown stains on the skin, to the deep red / purple port wine stains that spread across the face of so many newborn babies.

It’s high-tech - treating the discoloration in the skin without harming it, so birthmarks can be removed without any scarring.  To understand the technology, picture a clear balloon with a red or brown balloon inside.  When doctors “zap” the skin with quick pulses of laser light, the energy penetrates the first balloon without popping it.  As it hits the inner balloon, it bursts into tiny fragments that can easily be absorbed.  The laser is tuned to the color in the skin cells and, just like the balloons, it disintegrates the discoloration without harming the outer skin.

Here’s another “cool” thing – doctors use a cooling devise to keep the skin comfortable during treatment. A light spray of chilled air precedes each laser pulse.   Patients are awake and relaxed during the procedure, which can be done in the doctors office.

V-beam Perfecta laser treatment is now available at Midwest Dermatology Clinic.  If you or someone you know has questions, check the website at www.midwestderm.com for convenient office locations.
